FORESTRY CS MAKES MAIDEN VISIT TO KFS

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah M. Barasa has today visited the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) on her maiden visit following her appointment to the Ministry by His Excellency the President. The CS who was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Forestry Mr. Gitonga Mugambi on her familiarisation tour was received by the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Mr. Alex Lemarkoko and the Vice Chairman of the Board Mr. Kunal Chowdhari. 

The visit marked her first official engagement with the institution tasked with the sustainable management, conservation, and development of Kenya’s forest resources since taking up her role.

During the tour, the CS was taken through the agency’s core operations, forest conservation strategies, and ongoing projects aimed at addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. She spoke on her commitment to environmental stewardship, regional climate resilience and community climate resilience. She also spoke on the early warning systems to address the risks of drought in specific counties namely Kitui and Samburu.

In her address to the staff, the CS thanked them for steadfastly guarding Kenya’s forests which she noted were a national heritage. She pledged to support the Service in order to ensure that it plays its part in national development by providing critically required environmental services to all sectors of the economy. 

The CS also agreed to prioritise staff welfare issues which she said were essential for effective service delivery. She called on all staff to observe integrity and transparency in the execution of their duties. 

The CCF briefed the CS on the programmes and projects being implemented as well as the strategies and measures being employed to ensure that the Service delivers on her mandate to the public. 

The CCF also pointed out the leading role being played by the Service in the actualisation of the 15 billion tree growing campaign which is a flagship project of his Excellency the President. He thanked the Government through the CS for the support that KFS has gotten in the employment of more staff and especially forest rangers who have been instrumental in securing Kenya’s forests. 

Other officers who accompanied the CS were the Secretary Administration Mr. Evans Mutari and the Forest Conservation Secretary Mr. George Tarus among other officers.
